Goa Institute Of Management Placement Report (Interim) For PGDM Batch 2012-14

As placement seasons enters the final leg, 96% of the students at Goa Institute of Management have already been placed successfully

The formal closing of the placement season is still a couple of months away for the batch of 2012-14, but top-notch business institutions are already seeing very high placement figures. Goa Institute of Management, one of the ‘top 20’ business schools in the country, has released data revealing that 96% of its PGDM batch of 2012-14 have been successfully placed. As on 15th April 2014, 223 students out of an eligible batch of 231 have been given placements. GIM has had a steady placement rate over the years.

The IT/ITeS and BFSI sectors, in particular, accounted for large numbers – 40% and 35% respectively. Other sectors that recruited in double digits were Consulting and FMCG. A highlight this year was the achievement of 4 students in securing international postings in the Gulf region. The average salary (CTC) of those placed is about Rs 8 lacs with the maximum being 14.8 Lacs per annum. About 40% of those placed were in the CTC range of Rs 8 to 10 lacs. Some of the companies who have so far recruited in double figures are J. P. Morgan, Wipro, Cognizant, ICICI Bank, eClerx & Infosys.

Highlighting its core strength, the majority of the jobs for GIM have been generated in the Marketing domain. While the number of recruiting companies has increased significantly to 59, what’s interesting is that 26 of these are first-time recruiters at the GIM campus. This has added to the richness of the jobs offered to the students, since the recruiting companies have been from a whole range of industries.

"I think this has much to do with our intake policy," says Prof. Tarun Pasricha, Chairman, Placement Committee at GIM. "We’ve never had less than 30% of women in a batch. Also, the typical profile of a student who joins a B-school is that of an Engineer, with a couple of years of IT experience. While B-schools across the country average about 90% of such students, our current batch has just 75%. At GIM we are increasingly giving preference to students from non-engineering backgrounds, like Arts and Humanities. Apart from adding diversity and perspective to the classrooms, they also find placements with companies that have diverse needs."

One thing that also seems to be working in favour of GIM is its reputation in the industry for grooming managers that stay longer in their first jobs as compared to other B-schools. Studies have revealed that a GIM Post Graduate rarely hops jobs in the first year. Discerning recruiters have also identified that GIM students try twice as hard at work to prove their credentials and that of their B-school as comparable with the best.

Incidentally, GIM has a well-etched pedagogical philosophy, which is ‘Industry-centric’. The focus is not just on getting jobs, but more on bringing out the student’s ability to add value to the organisation they work for.

"If the product is good, it will sell," says Dr. Sunil Rai, Director GIM. "The role of B-school management is to create the right environment. In terms of support, the college will give its full backing in terms of the right input and communication, as well as industry interface. Students should also take it upon themselves to look at roles, rather than just packages. Generally, roles are classified into pure-managerial, semi-managerial and executive. Lateral hires generally end up with pure managerial roles whereas freshers land semi-managerial or executive ones. When you have to compare between a college with an average salary of 10 lakhs and one of 9.5 lakhs, you must look at the college with a higher percentage of managerial and semi-managerial roles."

Established in 1993, this premier business institute, located in Sanquelim- Goa, has been focussing on "quality placement" for the last few years. This has played an important role in catapulting Goa Institute of Management among the Top-20 B Schools of India.
